Haydn’s Rider Quartet gets its nickname from the hectic gallop of the Finale, but even better than the virtuoso high jinks of the Finale is the opening Allegro’s delicious brand of dry, acerbic wit. Cork’s Mairéad Hickey joins with Budapest’s Izabella Simon for the subtle beauty of Beethoven’s second A major Violin Sonata. Andrea Tarrodi’s Duo for viola and cello is a miniature jewel, the more beautiful for being so utterly unexpected. The Dutch Delta Piano Trio introduce themselves with Shostakovich’s overwhelming wartime Trio, written in memoriam for a close friend.
