In Search of Beethoven: A Personal Journey is journalist and broadcaster John Suchet’s latest and most personal book dedicated to the life of the extraordinary composer. Part biography, part memoir, part travelogue, John draws on his own life and career as a foreign correspondent and news anchor to show how Beethoven’s music has accompanied him through the best and worst of times.

A Financial Times Best Book of 2024

John will be introduced by Francis Humphrys, CEO of West Cork Music and Artistic Director of West Cork Chamber Music Festival.

Admission: €16

The music of Beethoven was with John Suchet as a music-loving and adventurous teenager, as a journalist entering Beirut in the grip of civil war, and as he has travelled to Bonn and Vienna to visit the buildings in which John lived and worked. In this novel and compelling book, we see Beethoven brought vividly – and sometimes painfully – to life, with comprehensive coverage of new and ground-breaking research into the ongoing mysteries surrounding Beethoven’s health and ancestry, including the as yet unexplained cause of his deafness.

John traces Beethoven’s footsteps from his early years in Bonn to his dying days in Vienna, taking us on a journey both literal and symbolic, to demonstrate the life-changing power of great music.
