In his book The Walking Effect, leading fitness expert and West Cork resident Karl Henry inspires us all to embrace the power of walking and the supreme benefits it has on our physical and mental health. Karl’s advice is for all ages and fitness levels as he covers everything from strolls to hikes and has excellent tips for those who haven’t been exercising regularly and are keen to start walking.

Karl shares his favourite walks around Ireland including ones of varying distance and ability from each of the four provinces, with suggestions for farm walks, country house walks and cliff walks. But West Cork takes centre stage in the book as all of the magnificent photos are by Kieran Hayes and were taken at Long Strand, Castlefreke and Lough Hyne.

People are overwhelmed by health and fitness messages and complicated has become the new simple. My mission is to make exercise simple and accessible and show people how easy it is. It is time for us to come back to basics and understand the incredible power that is walking.’

The Walking Effect: The Magic of Walking for Wellness and the Best Places in Ireland to do it explains the science behind walking and the positive effects it has on our bodies and minds.
