Conor Power’s novel Hurling 1810 is set against the background of a forgotten era in hurling history—when landlords controlled the game, and large sums of money were at stake. Seán O’Meara takes the pay of landlord Charles Kavanagh but feels he is betraying his father, who died in the 1798 Rebellion. He has a plan, but first he must forge a path between loyalty and betrayal on and off the pitch. Kavanagh is obsessed with the idea that keeping the ancient game going will bring cohesion and prevent the people from tearing themselves apart or rebelling against their overlords. This historical novel provides a gripping account of the political and social tensions of the time and a fascinating insight into what was then known as hurling-at-goals, the modern form of which would begin to evolve decades later.
