Dana Zemtsov comes from a family of viola players so the rich, dark viola tone is in her blood. She has chosen to bookend solo sonatas by Fazil Say and Stanley Weiner with a Fantasy and Chaconne by Bach. Fazil Say’s two movement Sonata in memory of a Turkish viola player begins with a keening, anguished lament in the first movement, followed by an Allegro assai of increasing virtuosity and a catalogue of bowing styles leading to a brilliant finish. Weiner’s Sonata will surely be new to everyone in the audience. Born in USA, he was concertmaster for Bernstein’s New York Symphony before moving to Europe to become a composer.
