There can be no happier way to open any concert than with this exquisite celebration of Haydn's genius. He wrote to Mozart that he had composed the Op.33 set in an entirely new way, for he was no longer concerned with problems of form and could compose music that seems lighter than air, music that is effortless and filled with joy. Dvořák’s A flat Quartet turned out to be his final quartet, infused with his love of his homeland and its traditional dances, made all the more precious by his long absence in America.
