The Meliora Quartet is on its second year in the Festival Masterclass series. Its members are from Ireland, Ukraine and Moldova and are all studying at Cork School of Music. Mendelssohn’s Op.12 Quartet was actually his third completed quartet, composed when he was twenty. The second movement Canzonetta is one of Mendelssohn’s most popular quartet movements often arranged for other instruments. Also outstanding is the smouldering Andante. Borodin’s Second Quartet is justly famous for its Notturno slow movement every bit the equal of Tchaikovsky’s Andante cantabile. A gorgeous love-struck programme from an enthusiastic young Quartet.

Admission: €7
