9. Violin Talk
Conservation of a unique tree for musical instruments and the impact of CITES regulations on the music world
Jose Catoira's talk on alternative woods in instrument making has had to be cancelled due to illness.
Instead Niall Flemming will talk about the vexed and difficult question of pernambuco, the wood used to make bows. Pernambuco trees grow in Brazil and have been over-exploited by loggers almost to extinction. Although steps have been taken for its survival, there is a danger that all trade in pernambuco, including in finished bows, will be subject to restrictions. All string players need to be aware of the issues involved. Niall Flemming is an expert on pernambuco.
