3. Young Musicians Series
The young Sonic Quartet are students at the RIAM in Dublin on their second visit to the Festival masterclasses. The four musicians are Maxim Novojilov, Julia Antolec, Shane Quinn and Doiréann Ní Aodáin. They have chosen a dramatic programme featuring three adventurous works as one expects from young musicians. Schulhoff spent the 1920s experimenting with different styles. His Five Pieces is a popular, tongue-in-cheek pastiche of different dances, great fun for audience and musicians. 'Satellites' by Garth Knox is one of Kronos Quartet's 'Fifty for the Future' series, specially composed to give young musicians the experience of modern performance techniques. Finally Sonic Quartet will play the C minor quartet from Beethoven's Op.18 set. This magnificent quartet shows Beethoven releasing his ferocious energy into music of dramatic power, at the same time finding space for melodies of incandescent beauty.
