In this intimate recital Ardeo Quartet explore the work of three women composers. Emilie Mayer in her lifetime was known as the female Beethoven. She started composing in her late twenties and became a student of Carl Löwe. She was highly prolific, producing 8 symphonies, an opera, a piano concerto and multiple chamber works including 7 string quartets. Her scores are currently being rediscovered. The Festival will also hear more of Bushra El-Turk as we are co-commissioning with the Amsterdam String Quartet Biennale a new quartet for Dudok Quartet to premiere next year. She is a prolific London-based composer of Lebanese roots and is particularly interested in integrating music from different cultural traditions and in challenging socio-cultural issues. Saffron Dusk is dedicated to the victims of the Beirut explosion in August 2020. It is a short work with its own unique sound world. Anna Clyne is a hugely successful New York based composer. Her 2020 quartet Breathing Statues was a Beethoven 250 commission referencing three late Beethoven quartets and Rilke’s poem On Music, whose first line is
