Joanne McCarthy writes in Irish and English. Her work has been widely published and anthologised, including in Poetry Ireland Review, The Stinging Fly, Rattle, Gutter, Channel, Aneas, and The Honest Ulsterman.

She was selected for Céadlínte / Poetry Ireland Introductions (2024), received the Máire Mac an tSaoi Irish-language poetry distinction (2022), and was awarded an Arts Council Bursary in Literature. In 2025, she won first place in the Four-Faced Liar Poetry Competition, she was Highly Commended in the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award, and was shortlisted for the An Post Irish Book Awards Poem of the Year.

She holds an MA in Poetry, with distinction, from Queen’s University Belfast, and is co-editor of The Waxed Lemon literary journal.
