Amy Tyson

Instruments: Composers

Amy Tyson (b. 2006), is a Manchester-based Irish composer currently studying at the Royal Northern College of Music under Dr Laura Bowler, having previously studied in Belfast with Dr Anselm McDonnell. Amy was born in Dublin and moved to Belfast at a young age, and her work is often influenced by Irish folk music and stories that she grew up with. Other influences come from other artistic disciplines such as the paintings of Van Gogh and also the writings of Samuel Beckett, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, and James Baldwin, often exploring the emotional impact, historical context and also philosophical aspects of these authors’ works such as nihilism and existentialism. Many of her compositional inspirations include Rebecca Saunders, Helmut Lachenmann, Salvatore Sciarrino, and Kate Soper. In her own work, Amy explores a variety of timbral and textural soundscapes in particular, but also experiments with harmonic capabilities, often working with microtones and sometimes incorporating harmonic elements of Latin guitar music.
