Liz Nugent and Catherine Ryan Howard are two of Ireland’s most exciting crime writers and both will join us to read from their new novels.

When Liz Nugent’s new novel Skin Deep opens, Cordelia Russell has been living on the French Riviera for twenty-five years, passing herself off as an English socialite. But her luck, and the kindness of strangers, have run out. The arrival of a visitor from her distant past shocks Cordelia. She reacts violently to the intrusion and flees her grotty flat to spend a drunken night at a glittering party. As dawn breaks she stumbles home through the back streets. Even before she opens her door she can hear the flies buzzing. She did not expect the corpse inside to start decomposing quite so quickly…

‘Monumentally good. Liz Nugent is a beautiful writer and among the very best storytellers in the world.’ Donal Ryan

‘I loved, loved, loved Skin Deep – the compassion of it, the beauty of the language, how glamour and horror intersect, how the tension twists tighter and tighter and is brilliantly done… her best yet!’ Marian Keyes

‘Liz Nugent has written her darkest book yet, a literary thriller that’s a compelling, one sitting read.’ Sinéad Crowley

Before becoming a full-time writer, Liz Nugent worked in Irish film, theatre and television. In 2014 her first novel, Unravelling Oliver, was a Number One bestseller and won the Crime Fiction Prize in the 2014 Irish Book Awards. Her second novel, Lying in Wait, went straight to Number One in the Irish bestseller charts, remained there for nearly two months and won her a second Irish Book Award. Skin Deep, her third novel, was published in April 2018. She lives in Dublin with her husband.

In Catherine Ryan Howard’s The Liar’s Girl Dublin's notorious Canal Killer is ten years into his life sentence when the body of a young woman is fished out of the Grand Canal. Though detectives suspect they are dealing with a copycat, they turn to him for help. He claims he has the information the police need, but will only give it to one person – the girl he was dating when he committed his horrific crimes.

Her first love confessed to five murders. The truth was so much worse.

‘Catherine is such a skilled storyteller – every setting was evocative, every hook well-placed, every twist expertly-timed. Astonishingly good.’ Jo Spain

‘[A] clever and intriguing tale… All the clues were there but so ingeniously hidden that I couldn't figure it out.’ Liz Nugent

‘Heartstoppingly brilliant - a completely convincing, expertly plotted tale. The pace is unrelenting. Catherine… is an extraordinary talent.’ Jane Casey

Catherine Ryan Howard was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1982. Prior to writing full-time, Catherine worked as a campsite courier in France and a front desk agent in Walt Disney World, Florida, and most recently was a social media marketer for a major publisher. She is currently studying for a BA in English at Trinity College Dublin. Her debut novel Distress Signals was published by Corvus in 2016 and was shortlisted for the CWA John Creasy (New Blood) Dagger. The Liar’s Girl was published in March 2018.
