John Cockburn

Instruments: Makers | Violin Makers

John Cockburn’s passion for violin making arose from lifelong obsessions with acoustics, craftsmanship, and music of all genres. Following stints as an apprentice church organ builder and a professional bass guitarist he pursued an academic career, eventually becoming a professor of physics at Sheffield University. John had the great good fortune to learn violin making over many years from Neil Értz, and now pursues violin making as a full time career from his workshop in Sheffield.

He has been making instruments for advanced students and professional players since 2005, always striving to produce instruments that combine high aesthetic appeal with the sound and playability required for performance at the highest level.
