In these two beautifully written memoirs poet Seán Hewitt and art critic Cristín Leach turn to artists and poets who came before them as a way of making sense of the world in the face of heartbreak. Seán and Cristín will be in conversation with Rachel Andrews.
All Down Darkness Wide is a luminous and haunting memoir from prize-winning poet, Seán Hewitt, a story of love, heartbreak and coming of age, and a fearless exploration of queer identity and trauma. When Seán meets Elias, the two fall headlong into a love story. But as Elias struggles with severe depression, the couple comes face-to-face with crisis. Wrestling with this, Seán Hewitt delves deep into his own history, enlisting the ghosts of queer figures and poets before him. From a nineteenth-century cemetery in Liverpool to the pine forests of Gothenburg, Hewitt plumbs the darkness in search of solace and hope. All Down Darkness Wide is an unflinching meditation on the burden of living in a world that too often sets happiness and queer life at odds, and a tender portrayal of what it’s like to be caught in the undertow of a loved one’s suffering. By turns devastating and soaring, it is a mesmerising story of heartache and renewal, and a work of rare and transcendent beauty.
Negative Space is the searingly intimate literary debut from top Irish art critic Cristín Leach and it weaves words and art with an unravelling of self that comes when a marriage breaks. In a multi-layered and incisive narrative, Leach writes about the gaps between reality and perception, about writing and anxiety, body and brain, breaking and making, succeeding and failing, conventionality and independence. The non-linear structure of Negative Space, with repeats, retakes, and details deliberately left unsaid, mimics the gaps in memory and understanding that are part of the human condition, especially during times of great stress. It’s about art and writing as a fundamental way of explaining and understanding the world, perhaps saying what cannot be said, or revealing without showing. Negative Space is a memoir about writing and the expression of art as a salve and a means of escape, marriage as a refuge and a trap, the nature of home, and what happens when everything falls apart.
