Later in the Festival Anastasia Kobekina will join the Chiaroscuros for the Schubert Quintet (Event 64) so she will play these two Bach Suites on gut strings. These glorious works have a hypnotic effect on modern cellists and audiences alike. A set of archaic courtly dances over 300 years old seems an unlikely obsession for our speed-driven age but their grip on our taste is unwavering. In the case of the G major Suite there is the combination of rhythmic energy with what we could call the eternal spirit of the dance, which seems to work unbidden into every crevice of our minds and leaves us elated and purified. The Third Suite positively rejoices in the extrovert and confident key of C major. Openness, riches, magnanimity are on offer here, presented in a generous and open-hearted embrace.
