Beethoven Cycle 5
Fanny Clamagirand and Roustem Saitkoulov bring us the last two magisterial works of this magnificent cycle of violin sonatas. Beethoven’s most famous Sonata has inspired many powerful reactions. Tolstoy wrote a famous and provocative novella named after it, a tale of a doomed marriage, terrifying jealousy, suspected adultery and brutal murder. The protagonist asks: They played Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata. Do you know the first presto? It is a terrifying thing that sonata. And especially that part. Famously this music can take you to places you have never before been, a new world with new possibilities. One of this music’s many ironies is that the dedicatee never played it, calling it outrageously unintelligible. Its successor, the wondrous G major Sonata, was written many years later, often described as the greatest of the set it lives in another world of tranquil beauty. This is a unique opportunity to hear these two masterpieces side by side.
