Everyone at West Cork Music would like to send our sincere congratulations to Anne Carson who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature today to recognise her extraordinary body of work.
An esteemed guest at the West Cork Literary Festival in 2019, Anne is a poet, essayist, professor of Classics, and translator who is widely regarded as one of the most original writers working today.
The Nobel Prize committee said they had selected her ‘for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature’. The Prize is awarded for a lifetime’s body of work and is regarded as the most prestigious award in global literature, with the winner receiving 12 million Swedish kronor (£900,000, $1.2m).
She has received many other awards for her writing including the T.S.Eliot Prize, a MacArthur Fellowship, a Lannan Literary Award for Poetry and a PEN Award for Poetry in Translation.
Anne was introduced at our festival by Sarah Byrne from The Well Review, a Cork literary journal, and her visit to the West Cork Literary Festival was supported by Cork County Council.
Anne Carson is now the second Nobel Laureate to have graced our stages, as Seamus Heaney read at the very first West Cork Chamber Music Festival in 1995.
