Workshop: Travel Writing: The Sea with Helen Scales
- Professional Development
- €245
- Whiddy Island
- 16/07/2025 - 9:30 am - 2:30 pm
Immerse yourself in the seascape of West Cork’s Whiddy Island, when you join marine biologist and bestselling author Helen Scales to explore travel writing, with a focus on nature and place in coasts and seas.
Beginners welcome. No writing to submit or required reading beforehand. Please bring sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing because some classes will be held outdoors, weather permitting. You may also wish to bring a towel (foot dipping will be encouraged!)
Max: 15 participants
Bring a notebook, pens and pencils, and your imagination to the island!
If you have any objects that conjure memories of the sea, please bring them along too (e.g. beachcombed objects, pebbles, postcards, photographs, poems). During this immersive workshop, you will undertake writing exercises, with Helen’s guidance, and have an opportunity to develop a new piece of writing, stimulated by your island encounters.
Helen’s latest book What the Wild Sea Can Be: The Future of the World’s Ocean has been longlisted for both the Baillie Gifford Prize for non-fiction and the Women’s Prize for non-fiction.
Note: The ticket price includes the daily ferry to and from Whiddy Island. This ferry departs from, and returns to Bantry Pier. This island-based travel workshop will run from Wednesday 16 to Friday 18 July, from 9.30am to 2.30pm each day with two breaks built into the day.
This creative island workshop is supported by Creative Places West Cork Islands and Cork County Council
