How can we best combine the personal experience of movement through a landscape with the other stories it contains? This three-day workshop with award-winning travel and history writer Tim Hannigan is a chance to explore the techniques and challenges of travel writing that engages with history and the lives of others.
The workshop takes place on West Cork’s Whiddy Island and is open to both new and more experienced writers. There is no requirement to submit writing in advance. Some of the workshop will take place outdoors – weather permitting – so bring suitable clothing and footwear.
Max: 15 participants
This workshop delves into the process of forging narratives from our own journeys – whether big or small, close to home or in far-off lands. We’ll pay particular attention to using our own experience in a place as a way to explore its histories and cultures, and we’ll consider ways to interweave research with our notes and memories of travel. If the weather allows, we’ll also explore the landscape of Whiddy Island itself in search of stories.
Please bring your own preferred writing device – whether pen and paper, a laptop or tablet – as well as a notebook for scribbling observations on the move. There is no need to have a current work-in-progress, but if you have a particular journey or landscape you wish to write about, you’re welcome to bring existing notes and research to the workshop. Some short readings will be shared in advance, with a longer optional reading list to explore before or after the workshop.
This workshop is supported by Creative Places West Cork Islands and Cork County Council
