Trio sonata in G minor from Sonata Sopra ‘Fuggi dolente core’ Op.22

Marini’s Sonata Sopra Fuggi dolente
core is taken from a collection of sonatas published in Venice in 1655
entitled Diversi generi di sonate, da
chiesa, e da camera. It is based on the Italian song Fuggi, fuggi, fuggi diletta amante. The
origins of this popular song are unclear, but the earliest appearance in print
can be found under the title La Mantovana
in a collection of madrigals by the Italian tenor del Biado, dating from 1600.
The melody seems to have found it’s way into many operas, songs and
instrumental works from all over Europe dating
from the 18th century. Marini uses the madrigal song as a wandering cantus
firmus in a set of free variations for two violins and continuo.
