Molly Aitken’s novel Bright, I Burn is inspired by the first recorded person in Ireland to have been condemned as a witch and it gives voice to a woman lost to history, who dared to carve her own space in a man’s world, and paid the price for it. It is a blazing story of power, patriarchy and sexuality in thirteenth-century Ireland.
Molly will be in conversation with fellow historical novelist Anya Bergman
When a young Alice Kyteler sees her mother wither under the constraints of family responsibilities, she vows to take better control of her own life. A keen businesswoman thanks to her merchant father’s tutelage, she marries her first husband and quickly becomes a powerful banker. When he dies, she swiftly remarries again, and later again… and again. Yet as her business flourishes, Alice’s state of mind begins to spiral. And when her fourth husband dies, a trailblaze of local gossip and resentment culminates in a fatal accusation of witchcraft.
