Kadenza

Teppo Hauto-aho’s Kadenza has been described as the most performed contemporary piece for double bass. It achieved this status by being regularly chosen as one of the contemporary pieces for the ARD International Music Competition Munich. It began life as a one-page piece for the composer to play in his Final Diploma Recital at the Sibelius Academy in 1969, its final version dates from 1984. Kadenza combines musical and technical skills in equal measure and is open to many differing interpretations. One player has described it as a melodic, singing, emotional piece. Don’t think of it as a contemporary work – just as beautiful and expressive music.
