Time for Trios and Tunes

The piano trio repertoire does not have the same dazzling range and scope as the string quartet, but it has a few jewels headed by Beethoven’s Archduke, featured in this series on 16 April, and amongst many others, Dvořák’s so-called ‘Dumky’. In this sumptuous work Dvořák asks his musicians to revel in his prolific melodic gifts. This gorgeous performance brings together musicians from Budapest, Paris and Cork – Izabella Simon, Emmanuelle Bertrand and Mairéad Hickey. They take outrageous liberties with the tempi in order to savour to the brim the contrast between the composer’s heart-on-sleeve romances and his headlong, intoxicating dances.

Beethoven wrote six piano trios that were in their day ground-breaking, creating broad flowing melodies and an indulgent attitude towards his big tunes. His Fifth Trio is a welcome example of the great man in relaxed mood. It is the second of two that he dedicated to Countess Marie Erdödy, one of his many loyal supporters. A fellow-composer described the lyrical third movement as ‘the loveliest and most graceful I have ever hear; it exalts and melts my soul whenever I think of it.’ Our illustrious guides for this performance last summer were Viviane Hagner, Johannes Moser and Barry Douglas.
