Between them they bring the world’s finest musicians, writers, and traditional artists to this harbour town on Ireland’s southwest coast. West Cork Music has been drawing audiences to Bantry for amazing festivals since 1995. With 23 days of events planned over the summer period this year, there is an exciting summer ahead!
The West Cork Chamber Music Festival
For ten days each July, Bantry House is transformed into one of Europe’s great chamber music venues. And spaces across the town and West Cork, from atmospheric churches to island community centres play host to renowned and emerging chamber musicians. Over fifty concerts unfold from morning to midnight, with coffee concerts, candlelit late nights, Talking Music conversations, and masterclasses open to the public. Many of the artists who come here feel compelled to return, drawn by the unique atmosphere this world-class festival creates, as well as its exceptional quality.
The West Cork Literary Festival
For eight days in July, Bantry fills with writers, readers, and ideas. The West Cork Literary Festival began on the fringes of the Chamber Music Festival. Since it emerged as a festival in its own right in 2000, it has built an extraordinary reputation for quality, standing out for the diversity of its programming and the warm welcome Bantry offers. WCLF attracts authors of genuine international stature while keeping the intimacy that our small harbour town provides. And our audiences, where locals and visitors meet with their literary heroes always have fascinating questions to ask! Events range from headline readings and panel discussions to hands-on workshops, children’s programmes, and open-mic nights, and the festival takes over the town.
Masters of Tradition
In late August, Masters of Tradition gathers some of the finest traditional Irish musicians together – uilleann pipers, fiddle players, sean-nós singers, flute and concertina players for a festival that celebrates the rich heritage and exciting future of Irish traditional music. The memorable conversations and breathtaking performances at this legendary festival, curated by Martin Hayes, draw audiences back from across the world year after year.
Beyond the Festivals
While our festivals tend to run from early in the day until late at night, there are lots of great things to do in Bantry around their events. Climb the steps at Bantry House and stroll through its gardens to take in views across the harbour and Bantry Bay. Browse the Friday market on Friday morning, or set out to explore the landscape.
The Sheep’s Head Way and the Beara Way on our neighbouring peninsulas offer some of the best walking on Ireland’s southwest coast, while boat trips out into Bantry Bay are easy to arrange. There are so many reasons to stay an extra few days, and start planning your next summer in Bantry!
Getting Here
Bantry is approximately 90 minutes by road from Cork city. Accommodation in the town and the surrounding area often books up well in advance, so early reservation is strongly recommended.
