Back by popular demand, the legendary Words Allowed workshop for teenage writers returns to the festival in 2020 for the tenth year in a row.

Please note that participants must be aged between 14 and 17 at the time of the workshop.

Designed to build the creative confidence and expressive ability of teenagers with an interest in writing it combines a high-energy workshop approach with talks and Q&A sessions on being a writer in the contemporary world where multimedia technologies and performance writing are assuming more importance alongside traditional book publishing. As well as covering traditional forms like poem, story and song, Words Allowed introduces participants to the essentials of Youtubeing & online video production. In an atmosphere of group support and encouragement for individual creativity, each participant will be facilitated in pursuing their own writing interests and in generating new work. Each participant will also have the opportunity to receive individual editorial feedback on a piece of work of their choosing.

This workshop is led by fabulous authors and facilitators Dave Lordan and E.R. Murray. Together they will help participants explore and enjoy their creative imaginations over an intense, fun, inclusive and inspirational week. The workshop is open to young people of all backgrounds, identities and abilities. Dave and Elizabeth are both very experienced in working with young people with special needs. The only requirement is an interest in writing or storytelling of any kind.

Some classes will be taught simultaneously by Dave and Elizabeth and some sessions only by Dave. Individual editorial feedback will be provided by Elizabeth.

Instructions for participants will be emailed on purchase. And we’re here to support anyone with any questions.

You will need

  • A good Wifi connection
  • Access to a Laptop, Tablet, PC or Mac with a microphone & camera
