Age Range

This is an advanced poetry class for poets who are interested in getting lost in the forest and shaking up old habits. Using the words of Dante, Shakespeare, Stanley Kunitz, Ruth Stone and Emily Dickinson, we will be borrowing from art, film, music and T.V. using David Lynch’s Twin Peaks as inspiration. You will be encouraged to step out and see how you can truly be the director of your own work – exploring colour, using helicopter and crane shots along with slow motion and montage. Doppelgangers, fairy tales, hunting metaphors and dramatic use of light and dark will be part of the journey to your vein of gold.

This focus will be on new writing and all writing will be done within the workshop. A booklet of poems will be provided. No previous knowledge of Twin Peaks is needed. All you need is pen and paper!

Martina Evans is an award-winning poet and novelist, the author of eleven books of prose and poetry. Burnfort Las Vegas was a finalist for the Poetry Now Award in 2015 and her latest book of poems Now We Can Talk Openly About Men is published by Carcanet in May 2018.

She has taught poetry at Birkbeck University, London Metropolitan University and University of East London as well as holding several fellowships at Queen Mary, University of London. A regular contributor to The Irish Times, she is a Royal Literary Fund Advisory Fellow and lives in London with her daughter Liadain.
