John FitzGerald: First Cut

Produced in 2017 as part of Southword Editions’ New Irish Voices Series, John FitzGerald’s new chapbook First Cut is his first publication. First Cut has already received a warm critical reception and marks the emergence of a unique new voice in Irish poetry from this Kavanagh-prize winning poet.

‘John FitzGerald’s poems, from bright contingency and chance location – a schoolyard in New York, a road in County Cork – retrieve epiphanic moments which now live on with enhanced significance…’Derek Mahon

Born in Ireland, John FitzGerald has been writing poetry since 2010. In 2014 he received the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Prize and in 2015 was shortlisted for the Hennessy New Irish Writing Award. He is the recipient of a 2015 Key West Literary Bursary and acted as a juror for the 2016 Poem for Ireland Competition. His poems have been published widely since 2014 in journals, newspapers and anthologies, including the Penguin Windharp selection of the best Irish poetry from 1916 to 2016. He has lived in Dublin, London and Italy. He works at University College Cork as University Librarian and lives with his family on a farm in County Cork.
