Meet The Artists - Behn Quartet

Behn Quartet

Kate Oswin and Alicia Berendse – violin

Lydia Abell – viola

Ghislaine McMullin – violoncello

The Behn Quartet take their name from Aphra Behn, the seventeenth-century playwright, poet, philanthropist of the arts, feminist, spy and political activist. They are a London-based string quartet, comprised of players from England, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Wales.

The Behn Quartet holds the CAVATINA Chamber Music Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music 2016/17, where they were awarded the Amadeus Prize 2016. They gave the world premiere performance of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ final work at St John’s Smith Square, and the broadcast premiere live on BBC Radio 3. Performances include recitals at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival, Norfolk & Norwich Festival, Guiting Music Festival, the Southbank Centre, Freemasons Hall, Colston Hall Bristol, in association with ABRSM, and a residency at Brel Music in France. A recording of works centered around Stravinsky with Oliver Knussen for Linn Records is scheduled for release in early 2017. The Behn Quartet were also part of the official 40th Anniversary celebrations of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, featured on the BBC and in news outlets worldwide.

The Behn Quartet have taken part in masterclasses with Lawrence Power, Levon Chilingirian, and the Fine Arts, Kelemen, Chiaroscuro, and Vanbrugh quartets. Their principal mentor is Martin Outram of the Maggini Quartet, and they study with Christoph Richter on the ChamberStudio masterclass scheme at Kings Place. Upcoming engagements include the Witte Kerk Recital Series in the Netherlands, the Halesworth Arts Festival, a world premiere at the Swaledale Festival, and a season opener for the Aylesbury Lunchtime Recital Series 2017/18. They will be joining the Doric Quartet for a performance of Shostakovich Octet, and will be giving recitals in association with Pro Corda and the Concordia Foundation. The Behn Quartet are generously supported by Help Musicians UK, the De Lancey & De La Hanty Foundation, and the CAVATINA Chamber Music Trust.
